Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima has concluded his participation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, where he represented President Bola Tinubu.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres commended Nigeria’s push for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, while Shettima promoted the country’s $200 billion energy transition opportunity to investors.
He also reinforced partnerships with the United Kingdom in trade, defence, and migration, and urged global support for UN reforms that would secure Africa — and Nigeria in particular — a stronger voice on the Security Council.
Beyond diplomacy, Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s digital inclusion drive, advocated African control over its $700 billion mineral wealth, and positioned the country as a hub for the $3.4 trillion AfCFTA market.
He also held discussions with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand healthcare and education access in Nigeria.
The Vice-President departed New York at the weekend, accompanied by cabinet ministers and senior officials. He is due to continue his engagements in Germany before returning to Nigeria.
