Seventeen Nigerian soldiers have died and 10 others wounded during a large-scale battle with armed terrorists in Niger State, military officials have confirmed.
The clash took place on 24 June near Bangi community in Mariga local government area, where terrorists attempted a covert movement into Kwatankoro Forest — a notorious sanctuary for armed groups operating across Nigeria’s north-west.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, acting spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, troops responded swiftly to intelligence and intercepted a group of roughly 300 insurgents in the Kwanar Dutse Forest.
Anele explained that the terrorists were believed to be fleeing pressure from ongoing military operations in neighbouring Zamfara State and were planning coordinated attacks on local communities.
“The firefight lasted over three hours, with our forces holding their ground,” she said. “The Nigerian Air Force provided precision air support, striking the terrorists’ escape routes with devastating effect.”
Although the exact number of enemy casualties could not be confirmed, the Army reported observing heavy blood trails, suggesting considerable losses on the side of the militants.
Sadly, 17 soldiers were killed in the line of duty. The Army also reported that 10 others sustained injuries and are currently being treated at a military hospital, with all listed in stable condition.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluwafemi Oluyede, travelled to Niger State to pay tribute to the fallen and to oversee welfare arrangements for their families. He praised the troops’ dedication and described the operation as a heroic stand against insurgency.
“Our soldiers gave everything to defend the lives of innocent Nigerians,” he said. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism and banditry in collaboration with other security forces. Citizens were urged to assist by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
