Senator Lalong And Others Pay Tribute To Late President Buhari

Senator Simon Lalong (APC–Plateau South) has joined other public figures in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose life was dedicated to national service.

In a statement issued on Monday in Jos, Lalong, who also served as Governor of Plateau State, said Buhari’s passing represented a significant loss for Nigeria.

“He lived a life defined by patriotism, integrity, and sacrifice. Whether as a military ruler or democratically elected president, he worked tirelessly for the unity and progress of our nation,” Lalong said.

Buhari passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital after battling a long illness.

Recalling his own interactions with Buhari, Lalong noted: “As governor of Plateau, I shared a close working relationship with him, and I witnessed first-hand his passion for Nigeria.”

Retired Brigadier-General John Temlong described Buhari as a dedicated officer who played a crucial role in preserving national unity during the civil war.

“He led from the front lines to protect the country’s sovereignty and later made lasting contributions as Minister of Petroleum by helping to establish the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation,” Temlong explained.

He acknowledged that Buhari’s administration was not without shortcomings but emphasised that his anti-indiscipline campaign left an indelible mark. “His legacies will outlive us all,” he added.

In his remarks, Mr Yakubu Datti, former Commissioner for Information in Plateau State, credited Buhari with defending democratic values and ensuring fair electoral practices.

“He leaves behind a record of restoring and nurturing democracy, which provided a level playing ground for it to flourish,” Datti said.
