Senator Rufai Hanga has called on Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, to unite in defending the country’s democracy and resist policies that could undermine the rule of law.
Addressing reporters in Kano, Hanga said proposals to establish state police could open “a Pandora’s box of political repression,” enabling elected officials to deploy armed units against critics and opposition voices.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s security reforms must prioritise inclusiveness and avoid creating tools that could be misused by powerful individuals.
Hanga also highlighted his legislative efforts, revealing that he had sponsored a bill to establish a University of Agriculture in Kura. The bill, he said, had passed its first and second readings and was awaiting a third reading and presidential assent.
The senator’s remarks reflected growing concerns among lawmakers about proposed security reforms and the broader need for deeper, more inclusive governance to advance Nigeria’s development agenda.
