The Nigerian Senate will on Wednesday confirm the appointments of the newly nominated Service Chiefs, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced during plenary on Tuesday.
Akpabio made the disclosure after reading a letter from President Bola Tinubu, seeking parliamentary approval for the appointments of the top military officers.
According to Tinubu’s correspondence, the nominees are Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Adm. Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.
The Senate President said it was crucial to expedite the screening and confirmation process so that the nominees could immediately assume their roles and strengthen the nation’s security apparatus.
Tinubu, in his letter, wrote:
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the four nominees listed as Service Chiefs of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
While I hope that you will consider and confirm the nominees, please accept, Mr President, the assurance of my consideration and best regards.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president made the changes last Friday as part of efforts to reinforce Nigeria’s national security framework amid ongoing security challenges.
