Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the Southwest region’s reputation as the driving force behind Nigeria’s development, describing it as “the beacon of progress and economic renewal.”
Speaking at the Southwest Leaders’ Dialogue held on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo State, Sanwo-Olu said the region’s legacy of education, innovation, and entrepreneurship continues to shape Nigeria’s growth trajectory.
“The Southwest was, and remains, the economic backbone of Nigeria,” he said. “Our nation stands on that treasure — a new era shaped by courage and bold performance.”
Sanwo-Olu credited President Bola Tinubu’s leadership for reviving investor confidence, stabilising the economy, and expanding opportunities across sectors. “In two and a half years, we have seen tangible results — a unified exchange rate, improved export markets, and increased national revenue,” he noted.
He urged regional leaders to use dialogue and collaboration to deepen democracy and build a shared vision for the future, saying, “We must strengthen our institutions, unite our people, and drive inclusive growth.”
The governor lauded the establishment of the Southwest Development Commission as a major step toward coordinated regional planning, calling on stakeholders to rally behind the new institution.
“It is time to summon our courage again,” he declared. “This region has always been the shining light of Nigeria in education, governance, and culture. We must now reclaim that heritage and shape the future with unity and action.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako, also commended President Tinubu’s bold reforms, describing them as essential for addressing the country’s structural and infrastructural challenges.
He said the Southwest remained a reference point for purposeful leadership built on inclusion and accountability.
“The dialogue is a bridge between citizens and government, ensuring governance that truly reflects the people’s aspirations,” Abiodun added.
