Putin to Miss Brics Summit in Johannesburg, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Attend

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the Brics Summit in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, 2023, as announced by the South African presidency. Instead, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia at the summit, according to Jerry Chifamba’s report for AllAfrica.

Earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that any attempt to detain Russian President Vladimir Putin during his Brics visit would be considered “a declaration of war” with Russia. The court documents related to this case were made public on July 18.

An arrest warrant for Putin was issued by the International Criminal Court at The Hague due to Russia’s involvement in the war against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022.
