A Retiring Assistant Controller General (ACG), Nigerian Correctional Service, (NCoS), Abimbola Ogunyemi, has called for speedy trial of cases in Nigerian courts.
Ogunyemi, who was the Zonal Coordinator, Zone F, Nigerian Correctional Service, made the call on Tuesday in Ibadan during her retirement ceremony organised by men and officers of the command.
She noted that there were backlog of pending cases in courts, particularly those involving inmates awaiting trial.
The outgoing coordinator said that expedited judicial processes on such cases would make some of the awaiting inmates get convicted, “and we will be able to manage them.
“But when they are still awaiting trial, it is not really easy to manage them; moreso, they are more in number, so with speedy trial of their cases, it will go a long way to lessen the task.
“Speedy trial of court cases would equally lead to decongestion of correctional facilities.
Ogunyemi also urged those that were still in service to be dedicated and remain committed to their duties.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Controllers of Corrections, in Oyo and Osun states, Oluwarotimi Babafemi and Oluwadele Olalekan respectively eulogised the retired ACG, for her contributions to NCoS.
Babafemi, who described Ogunyemi as a “discipline and thorough-bred officer”, said that the retired officer had touched many lives.
Olalekan said that the retired ACG was a soft spoken, humble, and unassuming person but firm.
Highlights of the ceremony was the cutting of the retirement cake and presentation of gifts to ACG Ogunyemi. (NAN)
