President Tinubu Hails Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar’s Legacy On 83rd Birthday

President Bola Tinubu has hailed retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his unwavering commitment to democracy and peace, as the former Nigerian leader celebrated his 83rd birthday on Sunday.

In a heartfelt statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu recognised General Abubakar’s instrumental role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape, particularly his decision to hand over power to a civilian government in 1999—a turning point that ushered in the country’s current democratic dispensation.

“His leadership during a delicate period in our national history demonstrated a deep commitment to democratic ideals and national unity,” Tinubu wrote.

Tinubu also highlighted Abubakar’s ongoing role as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, where he has contributed significantly to conflict resolution and electoral integrity across Nigeria.

“At a time when strong leadership and national cohesion are more important than ever, General Abubakar remains a guiding light with his steady voice of wisdom and patriotism,” he added.

The President described the retired general as a figure of inspiration, not only for his military service but for his continued contributions to Nigeria’s stability and progress.

“As he celebrates this milestone, we honour his legacy and pray for his continued well-being,” Tinubu concluded.
