Many residents of the FCT, have urged the Federal Government to ensure that the recent increase in Megawatts (MW) of electricity from 4,100 to 5,700 translates to steady power supply.
The consumers, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja were reacting to the 5,700 MW average daily power generated and distributed in the first quarter of 2025.
The residents residing in Lugbe, Nyanya, Kubwa, Kuje and environs told NAN that they were very happy with the development and urged the Federal Government to put infrastructure in place to enjoy steady electricity.
The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu had in a ministerial briefing held on April 17, said that the average daily power generated and distributed in the first quarter of 2025 was 5,700 MW.
According to him, when compared with the 4,100 MW achieved in the third quarter of 2023, it indicates a growth of 1,600 MW, nearly 40 per cent growth since we assumed office at the ministry.
Adelabu said that on March 2, Nigeria reached a remarkable generation available capacity of 6,003 MW, marking the first time this level had been recorded in the country’s history.
He said that the achievement was followed by a peak generation evacuation of 5,801.44 megawatts on March 4, which also saw an impressive daily energy output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours on that day.
“ Given that it took the country almost 40 years to achieve an incremental 2,000 MW average energy, we accomplished this in less than two years.
Mr Joseph Ogedegbe, a civil servant, residing in Lugbe, said that the increase in megawatts was commendable.
Ogedegbe said that the megawatts generated were encouraging, adding that his appeal as a consumer was for government to use it to improve power supply to businesses and homes.
“ I am happy with the megawatts of power generated and distributed, but what is important is that it should translate to improved electricity to end users,’’ he said.
Mrs Ronke Alao, a businesswoman also residing in Lugbe said that the government should do everything possible to improve electricity with the megawatts being generated.
“If such power is being generated, it should improve electricity and consumers will benefit from it.’’she said.
Mrs Blessing Okonofua, a business woman residing in Kubwa commended the Federal Government and the minister of power for the reforms being carried out in the power sector.
Okonofua, however, appealed to the government to put more infrastructure in place to ensure that megawatts generated translated to improved power supply.
Mr Murphy Onoja, a lawyer also residing in Kubwa said that government had invested so much in the power sector, saying that it would be appreciated if power supply was steady.
According to him, with the megawatts currently being generated, infrastructure should be put in place for consumers to enjoy improved electricity.
Mrs Hope Osimen, a Fashion designer residing in Kuje said that improvement in megawatts generated was good but it would be better if government could put infrastructure in place for consumers to enjoy steady power supply.
Osimen said that she was aware of what government was doing to improve power supply but appealed for more to be done to improve electricity.
Mr Sule Mohammed, a civil servant, residing in Nyanyan said that government had done a lot in the power sector but appealed for steady electricity supply.
”Government is carrying out a lot of reforms in the power sector, we are happy about the development, especially the improvement in the megawatts generated but all consumers want is to see improvement in power supply,’’ ,he said.(NAN)
