Professor Pat Utomi has said that traditional checkpoints are ineffective and unnecessary in tackling security threats on Nigeria’s highways. Instead, he advocated mobile policing strategies designed to keep security operatives constantly on the move.
Utomi told NAN that police forces were originally set up to operate as mobile units. He suggested deploying rolling roadblocks—teams of two or three police vehicles spaced at intervals and continuously patrolling major routes.
He explained that on highways such as the Benin–Ore road, several sets of armed police vehicles moving in sequence would create an “ongoing sweep,” enhancing visibility and deterring criminal activity.
The political economist said such coordinated patrols, combined with drone surveillance, would significantly improve safety on the country’s highways.
