New Digital System Aims to Curb Crime and End Harassment of Motorists
The Nigeria Police Force has announced a 30-day grace period for motorists to secure digital permits for factory-fitted tinted vehicle windows, with enforcement scheduled to commence on June 1, 2025.
This initiative, reintroducing the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system, comes in response to public concerns over the frequent harassment of drivers by security personnel.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Spokesperson, emphasized that this move is part of the NPF’s commitment to tech-driven policing reforms. “This approach strikes a balance between public safety and citizen convenience, ultimately fostering trust in our security framework,” he stated.
The fully digital application process, available at possap.gov.ng, incorporates National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN) verification, along with biometric checks to ensure transparency and accountability.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun highlighted that this measure addresses pressing security issues while accommodating legitimate vehicle owners. “Tinted vehicles have been exploited by criminals for kidnappings, armed robberies, and ‘one-chance’ schemes. This system will help differentiate between lawful owners and potential threats,” he remarked.
Key Features of the New System:
– Online Processing: Expect a 72-hour turnaround for permit applications
– QR-Coded Digital Permits: Facilitates easy verification by authorities
– Mandatory NIN/TIN Linkage: Designed to prevent fraudulent applications
– Special Provisions: Considerations for medical cases and security personnel
The police have issued a stern warning to officers found extorting motorists during the enforcement period, who will face severe penalties. Motorists are encouraged to complete their registrations before the May 31 deadline to avoid potential fines.
Note: The application portal opens on May 1, 2025, and vehicle owners with existing permits must undergo a digital revalidation process.
