Nigerian police have arrested four alleged cult members and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a security operation in the southern Delta State, the police confirmed on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Warri, Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe said that the arrests took place last Wednesday in the Mosogar community, following intelligence reports about cult-related activities in the area.
The operation, led by ASP Julius Robinson of the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), targeted the residences of two suspects. Police executed a search warrant at the premises, leading to the discovery of a black bag containing a locally crafted Baretta-style pistol, two rounds of ammunition, two homemade firearms, and eight live cartridges.
Officers also confiscated several mobile phones, a laptop, and items believed to be of ritual significance.
“Further enquiries led to the apprehension of two more suspects within Mosogar,” Edafe stated, adding that the group is believed to have links with the Aiye confraternity, a cult organisation notorious for violence and criminal activities in Nigeria.
The police have detained all four suspects for further questioning, and investigations are continuing to uncover additional links and possible accomplices.
