A village head in Akwa Ibom State has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force over alleged illegal possession of a firearm.
The arrest followed intelligence received by the police, prompting a targeted operation in Asik Ubofa Village, Effiat Clan, within Mbo Local Government Area.
In a statement released in Uyo, police spokesperson Timfon John said officers recovered an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines during the raid.
The operation was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, as part of efforts to verify intelligence regarding illegal arms possession.
The suspect remains in custody as investigators work to establish how the firearm was obtained and whether others were involved.
Police said the investigation would also seek to determine the suspect’s intent.
Reaffirming its stance against illegal weapons, the command warned that those found in unlawful possession of firearms would face the full force of the law.
The police also appealed to residents to continue sharing credible information to support ongoing security operations.
