A family of farmers came under deadly attack in Plateau State on Monday, leaving three dead and two seriously injured in an incident that coincided with a state-led initiative to address the region’s chronic insecurity.
The victims were reportedly tending to their tomato farm in Te’ebbe, Miango district, when unknown assailants ambushed them. The attack happened just hours after a state government fact-finding committee arrived in Bassa Local Government Area to engage communities on ways to foster peace.
Committee chairman General Rogers described the tragedy as a “devastating blow” to peace efforts.
“We were in a meeting with the Bassa Local Government chairman when we were alerted to the attack. It was horrifying—three women killed in cold blood, and two men critically injured while doing nothing but working on their farm,” he said at the scene.
Security forces have since begun investigations, and the victims’ bodies have been released for burial. The committee has appealed to residents to avoid reprisals and trust the authorities to pursue justice.
Meanwhile, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani paid a sympathy visit to victims of another deadly incident involving his state’s citizens in Mangu LGA, Plateau State. The victims, attacked en route to a wedding in Quan Pan, are currently receiving treatment at the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna.
“Their accounts are horrifying,” the governor said. “We are covering their treatment costs and will also provide psychological counselling to help them reintegrate with their families.”
Governor Sani assured the public that multiple arrests have already been made and pledged to monitor the case closely.
“No one involved in these attacks will escape justice,” he vowed.
