Pilgrims Board Lauds Ministers For Hajj Success, Highlights Challenges And Achievements

The Director of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Malam Kadiri Edah, has commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his State counterpart, Dr Mariya Bunkure, for their robust support in enabling a seamless 2025 Hajj pilgrimage for Muslim faithful from the territory.

Addressing journalists on Monday in Makkah, Edah remarked on the significance of the ministers’ backing, particularly noting Wike’s non-Muslim background and his hands-off yet supportive approach.

“Minister Wike’s involvement ensured that we operated efficiently and without interruption. His approval of essential logistics was crucial,” Edah stated.

He outlined the comprehensive preparations undertaken by the board – from health screenings and orientation programmes to spiritual and legal education for pilgrims – all contributing to a well-organised pilgrimage.

Edah praised the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for coordinating efficient airlifts using high-capacity aircraft and improving living conditions in Saudi Arabia. “The food quality was higher, tents more accommodating, and medical services readily available,” he said.

Despite the general success, Edah revealed that visa processing posed a setback. Of the 1,531 intended pilgrims, 31 were unable to travel due to the Saudi government’s closure of visa issuance.

On the ground in Makkah, Edah confirmed that the board prioritised accommodation close to the Grand Mosque and ensured the provision of familiar Nigerian dishes. “The feedback we’ve received on food quality and comfort has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said.

In recounting specific challenges, Edah described a medical emergency during Arafat Day when a staff member collapsed but was promptly resuscitated and fully recovered due to the swift action of medical personnel.

He concluded by reaffirming the board’s commitment to maintaining high standards and credited the success of the 2025 Hajj operation to the collaborative efforts of government officials and stakeholders.
