Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has mourned the death of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a moment of reflection and national significance.
Buhari, who passed away in London at the age of 82, served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His death was confirmed by spokesperson Garba Shehu and former aide Bashir Ahmad.
Writing on his X handle, Obi said he was “shocked” by the news of Buhari’s passing.
“His death provides a solemn moment, not just for his family and close associates, but for our nation as a whole,” Obi noted.
Obi commended Buhari for maintaining dignity throughout his leadership and offered condolences to the late president’s wife, children, and extended family, as well as to Nigerians at large.
He ended his tribute with prayers: “May Almighty Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
