The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, held its historic 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, defying predictions of internal crisis and confirming Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
After the meeting, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum told reporters that the next NEC gathering will be on 23 July, where further discussions on the party’s national convention are expected. “Today’s meeting had a single focus: our engagement with INEC over the national secretary position. We all resolved that Sen. Anyanwu should continue in his role,” Damagum said.
He criticised party members who publicly undermine the PDP, calling for an end to internal attacks. “Enough is enough,” Damagum warned. “If you truly love this party, stop working against it.”
Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, reassured members and supporters that the party remains strong, stating: “What is happening today will shock many detractors. The PDP will not collapse.”
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed hailed the meeting as a “miracle” and emphasised that differences among party leaders have been resolved. “Conflicting press statements have ended; we are united,” he said. Mohammed added there would be no further need for unsanctioned stakeholder meetings outside of the formal NWC process.
The high-profile gathering was attended by governors from Oyo, Zamfara, Plateau, Adamawa, and Bayelsa, alongside prominent figures such as former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Prof. Jerry Gana, and Chief Bode George.
In closing, Damagum highlighted that the party remains the only major political force in Nigeria capable of settling internal disputes through dialogue rather than conflict.
