An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State on Friday ordered the remand of a 50-year-old woman, Kudirat Kareem, for allegedly exhuming a corpse and disposing of the remains without the family’s consent.
Kareem, who has no fixed address, is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and felony.
The prosecutor, Insp. Adesina Elijah, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 17 at Olugbodo Layout, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife.
He alleged that Kareem unlawfully exhumed the body of one Adeoti Olagunju and took it to an unknown location without informing the deceased’s son, Adebola Sowole, causing him psychological trauma.
Elijah further said the defendant sold an uncompleted building belonging to the deceased without the family’s consent, breaching the trust reposed in her.
He noted that the offences contravened Section 4 of the Osun State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2021, and Sections 434 and 516 of the Criminal Laws of Osun, 2002.
Kareem pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her counsel, Mr Martins Awe, sought bail in liberal terms, pledging she would not abscond.
Magistrate Kikelomo Adebayo, however, directed that a formal bail application be filed and ordered her remand at the Ilesa Correctional Centre pending consideration of the request.
The case was adjourned until Sept. 9 for mention.
