The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported that a road accident involving a Volkswagen commercial bus and a stationary tipper truck claimed one life and left six others seriously injured.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said in a statement on Sunday that the accident occurred in the early hours at Majidun, inward Ogolonto, directly opposite the MRS Filling Station.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the commercial bus, chartered to transport passengers to a scheduled event in Ogijo, experienced a sudden brake failure. The driver, who was reportedly speeding, lost control and collided forcefully with a tipper truck parked at the roadside for diesel purchase,” he said.
The crash resulted in the immediate death of an adult female passenger, while five women and one man sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. The injured were taken to Benic Special Hospital, and the deceased was transferred to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for formal documentation.
LASTMA officers also apprehended the tipper truck driver, who reportedly attempted to flee the scene, as well as the bus driver. Both were handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for further investigation.
“To restore order and ensure smooth traffic flow towards Ikorodu Garage, LASTMA personnel efficiently cleared the wreckage from the roadway,” Bakare-Oki said.
He expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution, discipline, and vigilance on the highways. He warned that speeding severely limits a driver’s ability to respond to mechanical failures or sudden hazards, significantly increasing the risk of catastrophic accidents.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting a culture of safe driving across Lagos State.
