Ondo State Targets Mpox Outbreak With Focused Vaccination Effort

Ondo State in south-west Nigeria is rolling out a targeted mpox vaccination campaign after confirming 12 infections in eight local government areas.

The state’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency says the outbreak has been detected in Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East, and Odigbo. Health officials warn the viral disease, which can be transmitted from various animals as well as between humans, is highly contagious.

Beginning 11 August and ending 21 August, vaccinations will be offered to adults over 18 in identified high-risk groups, including confirmed patients, their relatives, and frontline healthcare workers. Two doses will be administered at separate intervals.

Dr Victor Adefesoye, the agency’s Director of Disease Control, urged community leaders to help overcome vaccine hesitancy, stressing that the campaign is aimed at preventing wider transmission.

State Immunisation Officer Florence Fadiji reminded residents that the disease spreads through contact with infected animals, people, or contaminated objects, and listed symptoms such as sores, rashes, fever, and weakness.

Permanent Secretary Dr Francis Akanbiemu described the vaccination programme as vital to safeguarding public health and called for community-wide support.
