Ondo Police Detain Suspects After Violent Assault On Fuji Legend Obesere

Authorities in Ondo State have arrested two suspects allegedly linked to the attack on renowned Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Obesere, during a burial event in Okitipupa.

The incident occurred on Friday at Government Field, where Obesere was performing when a gang of touts reportedly disrupted the event. The musician was assaulted and a member of his team stabbed while trying to intervene. The attackers allegedly fled with valuables worth millions of naira.

Police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade said on Sunday that investigations identified a group led by a man known locally as “Emir” — Michael Abbey — as responsible for the violence. He said the suspects allegedly stole N4 million, a gold chain, a mobile phone and a wristwatch.

“Two suspects, Michael Abbey and Oniye Oke, have been arrested and confessed to their roles in the attack. A total of ₦479,100 has been recovered as part of the stolen proceeds,” Ayanlade said.

He added that efforts were continuing to track other members of the group and recover additional items.

Confirming the arrests, Okitipupa Local Government Chairman, Andrew Ogunsakin, described the incident as unacceptable and said his administration would not condone criminality. He said he had reached out to Obesere to discuss preventive measures going forward.

“Our security agencies acted swiftly and professionally. We are grateful for their cooperation,” Ogunsakin said.
