Ogun State To Host New Court Of Appeal Division

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has confirmed federal approval for the establishment of a Court of Appeal division in the state capital, Abeokuta.

The governor made the disclosure during a church service at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Ake, on Monday, to inaugurate the 2025/2026 legal year. He said the court would ease access to justice and reinforce his administration’s efforts to provide a supportive judicial environment.

“As we continue to respect court orders and judgments, we will also continue to support the judiciary in ensuring equitable dispensation and efficient administration of justice in Ogun State,” Abiodun said.

Ogun’s Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, described the development as a “dream come true,” pointing out that most appeals from the state currently go to Ibadan. She said the approval would benefit both Ogun and the neighbouring southwest, while reducing the backlog at the Ibadan division.

“When the governor assumed office, I suggested we work towards getting approval, and he promised to support it. We now have the go-ahead, and he has agreed to begin the court’s construction,” she added.

Delivering the sermon, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Ogunbanwo, Anglican Bishop of Ijebu-Southwest Diocese, urged judges to act fairly and truthfully, stressing that the judiciary remained the most powerful arm of government.
