Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has highlighted the historic role of Ibadan in shaping the country’s political and economic journey, describing the ancient city as “a home to all” with an enduring legacy of leadership.
Obi made the remarks during a visit to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence on Sunday. He was accompanied by Labour Party leaders and prominent Igbo indigenes.
“From politics to commerce, Ibadan has always been central to Nigeria’s story,” Obi said. “The city is blessed with distinguished figures like Oba Ladoja, whose vast experience as a former governor and senator will guide his reign as the 44th Olubadan.”
He assured the incoming monarch of his support, expressing confidence that the new reign would enjoy goodwill across Nigeria.
Responding, Oba Ladoja described his appointment as a divine call to serve. “The throne is not about glamour but about what you can bring to the people,” he said. “I see this as another opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of society.”
