Nnadozie Heroics Help Nigeria’s Super Falcons Secure Draw Against Portugal

African champions Nigeria put on a spirited display in Lisbon on Monday evening, holding host nation Portugal to a 0–0 draw in an international women’s football friendly.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was in sublime form, producing a string of saves to keep Portugal at bay and highlight why she is currently regarded as the continent’s top shot-stopper.

Playing less than 24 hours after arriving in Portugal, the Super Falcons showed exceptional organisation and determination, keeping pace with their opponents and nearly snatching victory in the closing stages.

Portugal nearly opened the scoring early on after a defensive slip by Christy Ucheibe gifted Diana Silva a chance, but the forward sent her shot wide. Nigeria then nearly responded with a goal of their own when Ordega’s through-ball reached Rasheedat Ajibade, whose inventive shot forced a save from Ines Pereira.

Nnadozie’s composure between the posts was tested repeatedly, particularly in the second half when she denied three successive chances in a stunning four-minute spell.

Late substitutions gave the Falcons renewed energy, with Ifeoma Onumonu and Ashleigh Plumptre helping to swing momentum in Nigeria’s favour. Ordega continued to create chances, narrowly missing the target herself before setting up Onumonu for what could have been a winning goal.

The result will boost Nigeria’s confidence ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they open their campaign against Tunisia on July 6 in Casablanca.

The team is scheduled to face Ghana’s Black Queens in a preparatory fixture this Sunday before kicking off their pursuit of a record 10th continental title.
