Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dealt a blow after a 1-1 draw with South Africa, leaving fans and analysts anxious about the Super Eagles’ prospects.
Football enthusiast Damilola Idris said the result had “greatly weakened” Nigeria’s campaign. “We must now defeat both Lesotho and Benin, and still rely on South Africa beating Rwanda. Goal difference could be decisive,” he told NAN.
Another fan, Alex Iheanacho, suggested Nigeria’s fortunes might hinge on off-pitch developments, with FIFA still reviewing allegations that South Africa fielded an ineligible player. “Qualification is possible only under extraordinary circumstances. Everything now depends on results going our way and FIFA’s verdict,” he said.
Dehinde Ogunbiyi of the Lagos State Sports Council called the contest “intense”, crediting Bafana Bafana for holding firm. He urged Nigeria to regroup quickly and avoid past mistakes. “We must secure maximum points against Lesotho and Benin with strong goal margins. Our qualification hopes are slim, but not gone,” he said.
