Nigeria has consolidated its presence on the global maritime stage with the election of Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, head of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), as Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH).
The announcement was welcomed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who described it as a milestone that reflects both Dantsoho’s leadership credentials and Nigeria’s growing influence in international shipping affairs.
Founded in 1955, the IAPH is regarded as the voice of the world’s ports, bringing together more than 300 members in 90 countries. It provides guidance to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and other UN agencies on issues ranging from port sustainability to global supply chain efficiency.
Oyetola said Dantsoho’s appointment is in line with Nigeria’s wider efforts to modernise its ports and expand its blue economy strategy. “This development reflects the significant progress made under the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme,” he said, noting that the reforms are designed to create a more efficient, secure and competitive sector.
He added that the government would continue supporting representatives like Dantsoho to project Nigeria’s voice in shaping maritime policies and strengthening international partnerships.
“Nigeria is embracing cutting-edge technology and streamlining operations to position itself as Africa’s leading maritime hub,” Oyetola stressed.
