Nigeria’s Capital Sees 150km Of New Roads As Government Targets Rural Integration

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has seen the construction of at least 150 kilometres of roads in satellite towns over the past year, as President Bola Tinubu’s administration pushes to extend infrastructure development beyond urban centres.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike made the announcement during the launch of the newly constructed A2 Junction–Pai road in Kwali Area Council. He noted that the project forms part of 17 key developments initiated to commemorate the President’s second year in office.

Wike said the rural road initiatives—both completed and in progress—highlight a deliberate shift toward integrating outlying communities into the federal infrastructure grid. “We’re not just focused on Abuja city. The people in satellite towns deserve access to basic services and economic opportunities,” he stated.

He cited numerous examples of recently completed projects, including roads in Bwari, Kuje, Abaji, and Gwagwalada. Among the highlighted projects were the dualised Kuje township road and the Sukuku–Ebo–Yangoji link. In total, six emergency road projects—one per area council—were finished and commissioned in 2024.

Looking ahead, the minister revealed additional road projects scheduled for 2025, including the long-awaited 18km Nyanya–Karshi dual carriageway and the 16.4km route linking Ushafa to the War College. Wike stressed that these roads would not only enhance mobility and trade but also improve emergency response and security in Nigeria’s rural capital districts.
