The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Worldwide (NIDO-WW) has joined millions mourning the passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, 13 July 2025, in London at the age of 82.
In a condolence statement on behalf of Nigerians abroad, Mr Chibuzo Ubochi, the Coordinating Chairman of NIDO-WW and Chairman of NIDO Europe, praised Buhari for his devotion to public service and contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“NIDO-WW joins all Nigerians at home and abroad to mourn the loss of a true patriot, a soldier and leader who devoted his life to the service of Nigeria,” Ubochi said.
He specifically pointed to Buhari’s decision in 2023 to oversee a peaceful transfer of power, describing it as a promise fulfilled that reinforced democratic consolidation.
“This singular act of handover deserves gratitude and respect. We honour the memory of a patriot, a disciplinarian and a democrat,” he added.
For the diaspora community, Ubochi said one of Buhari’s most enduring legacies was signing the NiDCOM Act, which formally recognised the contributions of Nigerians overseas and deepened their engagement in national development.
“Since then, the diaspora has felt recognised, welcomed and included. Though he is gone, this legacy endures in the hearts of Nigerians in the diaspora,” Ubochi noted.
NIDO-WW unites Nigerians living across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, and works to harness global expertise and advocate diaspora interests to support national growth.
“Rest in peace, President Buhari,” the statement concluded.
