Nigerian Supporters Shift Focus To AFCON After Super Eagles’ World Cup Setback

With Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup dwindling, football enthusiasts in Keffi, Nasarawa State, are urging the Super Eagles to redeem themselves by winning the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) later this year.

Nigeria slipped further behind in the qualifiers after a 1-1 draw with South Africa, who top Group C, while Benin Republic also remain ahead on points and goal difference.

Local fan Auwalu Mohammed said it would be “extremely difficult” for the Eagles to secure qualification.
“It’s hard to see us topping South Africa. I’d rather focus on AFCON, where we actually have a chance. The Eagles should do everything possible to win in Morocco,” he said.

Benjamin Nwankwo dismissed hopes of leapfrogging their rivals.
“Even if South Africa lose points, they’re still ahead. Benin Republic are also above us. It’s unrealistic to think both teams will drop all their games. Nigeria qualifying would take a miracle,” he argued, adding that an AFCON win would console fans.

Another fan, Isa Nasiru, said Nigeria’s lacklustre qualifiers had eroded public trust.
“They need to win AFCON to restore confidence. If they don’t qualify for the World Cup, they’ll have more time to prepare for the tournament. They reached the final last time; this time, they should win it,” he said.
