The Joint Security Force in Anambra State has detained seven men suspected of being initiated into a cult group with plans to disrupt the forthcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for 8 November.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed on Sunday that the arrests were made by the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) in partnership with Agunechemba Vigilante operatives. The suspects were caught during what authorities described as a Black Axe initiation ritual in a forested area of Obinagu, Abagana, in Njikoka LGA.
Items recovered from the location include a 25-litre keg filled with a red substance, ritual garments, two traditional drums, and footwear believed to belong to the suspects and others who fled the scene.
The arrested individuals were named as Emmanuel Ugorji (29), Chinuike Ogamba (22), Chibuzor Agudiegu (25), Destiny Okasi (22), Nzube Udewulu (19), Ifeanyi Anikpe (21), and Sunday Akuma (20).
According to the police, initial findings indicate the initiation was part of preparations to recruit the individuals as political thugs in parts of Njikoka and Anaocha LGAs during the election period.
Ikenga said the suspects attempted to escape upon sighting security operatives but were apprehended following a “swift pursuit”. Investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the group and uncover additional cult cells in the region.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, warned that the police would not condone any activities that could threaten the peace and stability of the state ahead of the polls.
He called on parents, traditional leaders and youth organisations to counsel young people against involvement in cultism and politically motivated violence, and urged residents to provide reliable intelligence to help law enforcement maintain order.
