Nigeria’s top military commander has vowed to take proactive action following the recent wave of killings in Benue State, pledging a complete review of security tactics and a determined pursuit of those behind the violence.
General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, made the promise during a visit to the Yelwata community, which has suffered multiple deadly assaults. Addressing residents, General Musa said the military would now adopt an offensive strategy: “We will take the battle to them, instead of waiting to be attacked again.”
The general expressed his frustration over the continued bloodshed, calling the latest incidents “unacceptable” and warning that this must be the final occurrence. “This is our country, and we will not give it away to lawlessness,” he said.
Musa indicated that insider information may be enabling the attacks, describing the killings as “clearly targeted.” He added: “There are betrayals within. Some individuals are providing information to these attackers.”
He said he would consult immediately with senior military commanders to redesign operational plans aimed at halting the violence and restoring stability in the region.
The Defence Chief also met with traditional and community leaders, stressing the need for unity and trust in addressing the crisis. “We must work as one to ensure peace returns,” he said.
Highlighting successful interventions in other parts of the country, Musa expressed confidence that similar strategies would work in Benue. “We have put measures in place elsewhere and they yielded results. This area will be no different,” he said.
Calling on young people not to give up, General Musa concluded: “We need all Nigerians to support the military. Together, we will end this cycle of violence.”
