A Nigerian Health, Safety and Environmental professional, Kamil Abiodun, has been elected Regional Vice President of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), Region IX, effective July 1, 2025.
His election is historic, marking the first time Africa and Nigeria will be represented in ASSP regional leadership since the Society’s founding over a century ago.
ASSP, a global body for occupational safety and health professionals, announced the appointment in a statement on its official website on Wednesday.
The Society said the move reflects its commitment to advancing global health, safety and well-being through occupational safety and health leadership.
Abiodun will serve a three-year term, representing the region on the Council on Region Affairs, alongside other dedicated volunteer safety professionals.
ASSP Region IX covers countries in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, including Nigeria, India, the UAE and Kuwait.
The region also includes student sections in nations such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and others across the wider region.
As RVP, Abiodun will lead Area Directors and Chapter Presidents, chair the Regional Operating Committee, and coordinate with deputy RVPs and supporting committees.
“I am committed to serving the Society, our regional members, and global safety professionals to raise standards and promote worker well-being,” Abiodun said.
He plans to visit the National Assembly in Abuja and the Lagos State Government upon assuming office, to engage key stakeholders.
Abiodun said the visit would share ASSP’s strategic goals and showcase how Nigeria can benefit from its global expertise and resources.
For over 100 years, ASSP has supported environmental, health and safety professionals in preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities worldwide.
It offers education, advocacy, standards development and a professional network to advance members’ careers and the EHS profession globally.
ASSP has members in more than 76 countries, including chapters in Nigeria, UAE, India, Kuwait and other parts of the Middle East and Asia. (NAN)
