Nigerian Army Trains Officers To Match Security Challenges With Strategic Thinking

Nigeria’s military must pair physical courage with intellectual expertise to overcome its current security crises, according to Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.

He made the remarks in Ibadan on Monday while inaugurating the 2025 Operations Planning Cadre course for middle-level officers, designed to strengthen leadership, analytical and planning skills.

Nnebeife told participants that success on the battlefield is rooted in “foresight, careful planning and deliberate execution,” not only physical power. He stressed that 21st-century leadership requires informed decision-making in volatile, uncertain and complex environments.

The training will expose officers to doctrinal reviews, scenario-based simulations and multi-dimensional operations, including counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, anti-banditry campaigns and peacekeeping missions.

He noted that the division had drawn on expertise from the Nigerian Air Force, security services and army training institutions to ensure participants gain a comprehensive understanding of modern warfare.

“The success or otherwise of any operation depends largely on the officers’ ability to read the battlefield environment and apply strategic plans adequately,” Nnebeife said.
