Nigeria’s Chief of Air Staff has reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to constitutional order, warning that any personnel involved in attempts to overthrow the democratic government will be prosecuted.
Air Marshal Sunday Aneke delivered the warning on Wednesday at a high-level strategy session with commanders at the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja. His remarks followed allegations that some military personnel were involved in a plot to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Condemning the alleged conspiracy, Air Marshal Aneke described it as “shameful, shocking, and wholly reprehensible”, insisting that the military’s primary role is to support civil authority rather than interfere in politics.
Over 40 people, including serving officers and civilians, were arrested in relation to the suspected plot in September last year. The Military High Command has indicated that those accused will face a general court martial. Families of some detainees have called for clemency and assurances of due process.
Addressing commanders, the Air Chief stressed the importance of cohesion, discipline and vigilance within the ranks, urging leaders to guard against indiscipline and unlawful activity.
He further warned that Nigeria faces a volatile security landscape, pointing to instability in the Sahel region, extremist violence and evolving geopolitical tensions. While there have been incremental security gains in parts of the country, he said persistent threats such as insurgency and banditry demand sustained operational focus and strategic adaptation.
With national elections on the horizon, Air Marshal Aneke called for absolute professionalism and political neutrality among service personnel, reiterating that the Nigerian Air Force remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the elected government.
Outlining the agenda of the commanders’ meeting, he said discussions would centre on reviewing operational effectiveness, recalibrating strategy and enhancing future capabilities, including the deployment of unmanned aerial systems.
He concluded by expressing confidence that the Armed Forces would continue to defend Nigeria’s stability and meet the expectations of its citizens.
