The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London clinic at the age of 82, have been brought back to Nigeria for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the aircraft carrying Buhari’s body touched down at Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina at 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday. The late president’s final journey was accompanied by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Awaiting the arrival were President Bola Tinubu, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina, ministers, state governors, top business figures, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, presidential aides and senior officials from Katsina State.

Among other dignitaries paying their respects were the former President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Nigeria’s military service chiefs and former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai.

In tribute to Buhari’s legacy, the Federal Government declared Tuesday a public holiday, as part of a week-long national mourning period announced by President Tinubu to honour the former leader’s decades of service to the nation.
