Nigeria–UK Ties Enter New Phase After Tinubu’s State Visit — Odumegwu-Ojukwu

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has described President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the United Kingdom as a turning point in bilateral relations.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, she said the visit reflected a strategic shift towards stronger economic and security cooperation between both nations.

Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, were hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle and held talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the engagements produced significant outcomes, including a £746 million port development partnership and expanded cooperation in trade, technology and security.

She added that both countries agreed to strengthen joint responses to terrorism and enhance digital border systems, while advancing the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.

The minister noted that the visit also boosted Nigeria’s global image and highlighted its investment potential across multiple sectors.

She pointed to a cultural showcase at Tate Modern, where an exhibition on “Nigeria’s Modernism” underscored the country’s creative heritage and global influence.

According to her, the visit represents the first full state visit granted to a Nigerian leader by the British monarchy in 37 years, signalling renewed confidence and deeper engagement between the two countries.
