Nigeria SDG Awards Spotlight Climate Action And Grassroots Initiatives

Nigerians have been urged to strengthen their commitment to climate action as part of efforts to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr Bala Inusa, Senior Technical Adviser to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2025 Nigeria SDG Awards and Symposium, organised by the African Cleanup Initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC).

The event, themed “Scaling Up Actions: Accelerating Nigeria’s Journey Towards the 2030 Agenda,” aimed to promote awareness and advocacy for SDG implementation. Inusa emphasised that success in climate action depended on collective participation from government, the private sector, and civil society.

Award recipients included Mrs Ibironke Olubamise of the UNDP Small Grants Programme, who praised the recognition and encouraged Nigerians to pursue excellence, stressing that environmental challenges must be addressed proactively. Mr Iduh Otene, Executive Director of APEARE, said the accolade would inspire the organisation to deepen grassroots climate initiatives and engage more Nigerians.

Ezegwoya Joseph, North Central Operations Coordinator at APEARE, also thanked organisers, emphasising that the recognition would motivate intensified efforts. The awardees collectively urged Nigerians to play an active role in achieving the SDGs by 2030.
