Nigeria’s government has reiterated its commitment to transforming the health sector through reforms designed to cut mortality, ease financial strain on households, and expand access to quality services.
Health Minister Professor Muhammad Pate delivered the message on Friday in Kano, where he handed over medical equipment and supplies to Gidauniyar Alheri Community Health Centre. Represented by Dr Ashiru Abubakar, he said the reforms, guided by the National Health Act, aim to create a unified system that ensures affordable healthcare nationwide.
Pate highlighted the importance of partnerships with the private sector and local communities, pointing to the health centre as an example of grassroots-driven healthcare. Established in 2009 by 10 communities under the leadership of former minister Dr Shamsudeen Usman, the facility has conducted 10,000 deliveries without a single recorded death and provided 75,000 antenatal consultations in four years.
The minister commended the community’s role, reaffirming federal commitment to strengthening both primary and secondary health institutions. Kano’s health ministry also pledged continued support.
