Nigeria Links Drug Control To Security As Tinubu Strengthens NDLEA Capacity

Nigeria’s government has underscored the link between drug trafficking and national insecurity, pledging stronger backing for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

At a ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu said illicit drugs not only devastate communities through addiction but also bankroll criminal gangs, insurgent groups and other destabilising actors.

He credited NDLEA’s transformation under retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa into a “results-driven” agency, adding that Tinubu’s administration had supported it with funding, policy coordination and inter-agency cooperation.

The commissioning of 48 new vehicles — 38 SUVs for regional and state commands and 10 saloon cars for directorates — will, Ribadu said, “amplify operational presence, strengthen deterrence and ensure that no trafficker escapes justice.”

Marwa hailed the development as part of a broader effort to equip frontline security and public health institutions, noting that NDLEA is now “counted among a distinguished group of security and drug law enforcement agencies around the world.”
