The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has given its official backing to the newly established Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a grassroots football initiative designed to celebrate the legacy of one of the nation’s most revered football icons.
The annual tournament, spearheaded by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, has also received the endorsement of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi. The competition aims to promote youth engagement in sport while commemorating the life and patriotism of the late Sam Okwaraji, who tragically died on the pitch during a 1989 World Cup qualifier in Lagos.
In a letter signed by Ruth David, Acting Director of Competitions at the NFF, the federation praised the championship’s “noble objectives” and its potential to positively impact football development in Nigeria.
“We commend the Foundation’s commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering passion for football at the grassroots level,” the statement read, urging organisers to ensure full compliance with global football regulations as set by FIFA.
The inaugural edition of the tournament is expected to kick off later this year, engaging secondary schools across the country.
Okwaraji, a qualified lawyer and former international midfielder, is remembered for his selfless dedication to Nigeria’s national team. His sacrifice remains a powerful symbol of national pride and sporting commitment.
