The National Economic Council (NEC) Committee on Overhaul of Security Training Institutions, chaired by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, commenced its fieldwork on Tuesday with an inspection of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos.
President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the committee on 23 October during the 152nd NEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, giving it one month to produce a blueprint for the rehabilitation and modernisation of the nation’s security training institutions.
Speaking after the inspection, Mbah said the committee would deliver a report that would enable the government to implement long-term reforms in security training and capacity building.
“It is impossible to expect professional and motivated security officers to emerge from deteriorating training environments. This exercise aims to restore professionalism and pride to our security institutions,” he said.
He added that the initiative aligned with Tinubu’s plan to build a secure environment to support the administration’s trillion-dollar economic vision.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is also a member of the committee, said the team had hired a consulting engineer to assist with technical evaluations, adding that implementation of the recommendations would be fast-tracked.
The college commandant, AIG Omolara Oluruntola, lamented the poor state of the institution’s facilities, noting that modernising the infrastructure was crucial for the effective training of police officers.
