NDLEA Arrests 75-Year-Old Man In Nationwide Crackdown On Drugs And Weapons

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested several suspects, including a 75-year-old man, during a series of anti-narcotic and security operations nationwide.

According to a statement by agency spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Sunday, the elderly man was arrested on 22 October with 4.7kg of cannabis in Ovum village, Obingwa LGA, Abia State. Another suspect, aged 60, was detained in nearby Apanta village with 225g of the same drug.

Additional operations across the country saw NDLEA operatives seize 150kg of cannabis from Lot Camp in Ikun Akoko, Ondo State, and 234.5kg from two suspects in Yan Aya, Saminaka, Lere LGA of Kaduna State on 24 October.

On the Abuja–Kaduna highway, officers intercepted suspects carrying 8,600 tramadol 225mg pills and rohypnol. In Lagos State’s Badagry area, NDLEA operatives arrested one suspect with 55kg of cannabis in Ashipa, while another was caught transporting 121.3 litres of “skuchies,” a dangerous cocktail of drugs mixed in liquid form.

In a separate operation in Zamfara State, a suspect was arrested on 20 October along the Gummi–Anka road with an AK-47 rifle and 1,746 rounds of ammunition for AK-47 and GPMG rifles. He was reportedly transporting the weapons from Sokoto to armed groups in Bagega forest, Anka LGA.

The suspect and the recovered arms have since been handed over to relevant security authorities for further investigation.

Babafemi added that the NDLEA has continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) awareness campaign in schools, religious institutions, workplaces, and local communities across multiple states.
