Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has offered a heartfelt tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a figure of quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and deep spirituality.
In his statement from Minna, Babangida reflected on a brotherhood that began in 1962 when they both enrolled at the Nigerian Military Training College. “From those early days, Muhammadu stood out — principled yet humble, quiet yet determined, deeply patriotic and fiercely loyal,” he wrote.
Babangida shared memories of decades spent facing “trenches and trials, victories and disappointments” together, highlighting the bond they built not just as soldiers but as men driven by service and discipline.
“Throughout our long careers, fate placed both of us in positions of leadership, though at very different times,” Babangida noted. “In all those years, Muhammadu remained true to his belief in the dignity of public office and the virtue of integrity.”
He described Buhari as a man who, beyond public life, was deeply spiritual and carried himself with humility. “We may not have agreed on everything — as brothers often don’t — but I never once doubted his sincerity or love for Nigeria,” he added.
Babangida observed that Buhari’s passing marks more than the loss of a former leader. “It is the departure of a symbol of Nigeria’s evolution from military rule to democracy; a man who, even in retirement, inspired many through his modest lifestyle and moral example.”
Concluding his tribute, Babangida offered prayers for Buhari’s family and the nation: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
