The devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, have resulted in a rising death toll of 200, with over 1,000 individuals reported missing, according to Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba on Friday.
In light of the tragedy, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, visited Governor Muhammad Bago to offer his condolences.
The United States and Turkey have both expressed their sympathies towards Nigeria, mourning the loss of over 150 lives and the displacement of more than 3,000 residents.
In a swift response, President Bola Tinubu sent a high-level delegation to Niger on Saturday to assess the damage and support relief initiatives.
During Obi’s visit to the Government House in Minna, Garba revealed that the flood has displaced over 3,000 people and affected more than 2,000 homes. The search for missing persons continues, with the number of recovered bodies increasing as families seek their loved ones.
Obi sympathised with the affected families and donated N20 million to assist them. He assured that he would personally visit Mokwa to meet with survivors and console the bereaved, stating, “I will personally visit Mokwa to express my condolences and support those who are grieving.” He prayed for the victims’ souls and for strength for their families during this difficult time.
Garba expressed gratitude on behalf of the Niger government for Obi’s generous support to the flood victims.
Additionally, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria conveyed its sorrow over the floods through its official X account, stating, “Our thoughts are with those grieving and those working tirelessly to provide relief.”
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also extended condolences to Nigeria, expressing sadness over the loss of life and the extensive damage caused by the floods.
