The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Local Government Headquarters in Kano State has died from injuries sustained during an attack by a mob on Sunday, 25th May 2025. The mob, which was allegedly protesting the death of a local man in police custody, also damaged several vehicles during the chaos.
The officer, identified as M.A. Baba, faced accusations from the mob’s leaders, who claimed he was responsible for the arrest of the man who later died in custody.
On Monday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, visited the site of the incident, and authorities have since arrested several individuals believed to be involved in the riots.
**Police Statement:**
“The Kano State Police Command is aware of an unfortunate incident that transpired on 25th May 2025, at around 08:15 PM, in the Rano Local Government Area. In response to public outcry and complaints, a motorcycle mechanic named Abdullahi Musa, male, suspected to be under the influence of substances, was arrested and detained for reckless and dangerous riding.
“The suspect was taken into custody but later exhibited signs of weakness, leading to his urgent transfer to Rano General Hospital, where he regrettably passed away on 26th May 2025, at approximately 06:00 AM, while receiving treatment.
“Following this incident, a group of miscreants mobilised and launched an attack on the Rano Police Division, looting, setting parts of the facility and two vehicles ablaze, damaging ten additional vehicles, and severely injuring the Divisional Police Officer.
“The DPO was taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Twenty-seven suspects have been arrested in relation to the events. The situation has been stabilised, and normalcy has been restored.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, after visiting the scene and extending condolences to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), has mandated a comprehensive and transparent investigation to uncover the underlying causes of these incidents and to ensure that those responsible for any misconduct are brought to justice.
“The Command, while expressing sympathies to the family of the deceased DPO, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service, calls upon residents to remain calm and to avoid taking the law into their own hands, allowing the investigation to take its course without interference.
“The Command reassures the public of its commitment to upholding peace and public order within the State and urges everyone to cooperate with the authorities during this investigation.”
