Security sources have confirmed that military troops successfully repelled a bandit raid on Gatawa village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, early on Friday morning.
According to a source who preferred to remain anonymous, the attackers opened sporadic fire but were initially confronted by members of the local vigilance group. The swift intervention of the Nigerian Army prevented the bandits from entering the settlement.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. near the township entrance along Dan-Kamarawa village and Gatawa village. Four vigilance group members sustained injuries during the encounter and are currently receiving medical attention.
The source praised the rapid response of the Nigerian Army, describing their actions as a demonstration of effective deterrence and proactivity, which averted what could have been a major attack on the village.
This development comes in the wake of widespread misinformation that a mosque in Sabon Birni had been attacked, with reports alleging the death of an Imam and worshippers. Both the Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Ayuba Hashimu, and the area’s House of Assembly representative, Alhaji Aminu Boza, have dismissed the claims as false.
The authorities emphasised that security in the area remains stable and under control. They urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting vigilance efforts to maintain peace in the community.
The military has also called on local residents to promptly report suspicious activities and cooperate with security personnel to ensure the protection of lives and property in Sabon Birni LGA.
This incident underscores the importance of rapid response and collaboration between the military and local communities in curbing banditry and safeguarding vulnerable areas in Sokoto State.
