Military Foils Terrorist Advance In the North-West, Dozens Killed

A major counter-insurgency operation by Nigerian security forces has dealt a significant blow to terrorist groups operating near the Zamfara-Niger State border, with dozens of fighters killed and a planned attack on rural communities foiled.

The military offensive, executed under Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY), took place on Tuesday in the Rijau area of Niger State, where troops confronted a large contingent of armed insurgents. The group was reportedly advancing from the troubled Baban Doka area in Zamfara State, moving towards multiple settlements.

According to Captain David Adewusi, spokesperson for OPFY, the troops — drawn from joint battalions in the Mariga and Zuru corridors — received air support that proved decisive in turning the tide of the battle. Tactical aerial surveillance and targeted strikes helped corner the attackers and disrupt their formation.

Recovered items included AK-47 rifles, motorcycles, ammunition, and radio equipment. Officials said the insurgents had been preparing for a campaign of violence and livestock theft across the region.

Tragically, one Nigerian soldier was killed during the engagement.

The military hailed the mission as a success and reiterated its vow to continue degrading terrorist networks threatening security in Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central zones.

“We remain resolute in this fight,” said Capt. Adewusi. “But public cooperation through timely intelligence remains crucial to sustaining these gains.”
