At least 30 disadvantaged Nigerians will receive free plastic and reconstructive surgeries in Sokoto this week, under a humanitarian health initiative launched by the Kindred Health Surgical Foundation.
The outreach, which runs until 12 September at Noma Specialist Hospital, is being carried out in collaboration with US surgeon Dr Dave Shaye of Project Life Foundation, alongside a team of Nigerian specialists and volunteers.
Professor Jacob Legbo of Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, who leads the project, said the programme is designed to support patients with debilitating or life-threatening conditions who cannot afford treatment.
He added that the initiative goes beyond providing operations, with emphasis on training young doctors, equipping hospitals, and strengthening post-operative care to build a more resilient healthcare system.
“Every surgery we carry out not only transforms a patient’s life but also contributes to the skills and knowledge of the local health workforce,” Legbo said.
Families of beneficiaries praised the intervention, noting that it offered hope to those for whom medical care would otherwise remain out of reach.
