Media Forum In Kano Calls For Responsible Civic Engagement Ahead Of Future Elections

The Kano Heads of Media Forum has urged residents to take the ongoing voter card revalidation exercise seriously, describing it as a crucial step toward credible elections and democratic stability in Nigeria.

At a news conference on Sunday, the forum’s chairman, Ado Warawa, said revalidating permanent voter’s cards was not a bureaucratic task but a civic duty that ensures every eligible citizen’s inclusion in the nation’s electoral process.

“This is the foundation of democratic integrity,” Warawa said. “Let us not delay participation until the last minute. Every citizen must act now and encourage others to do the same.”

Warawa called for a community-wide mobilisation effort to boost registration and verification both online and at physical centres. He stressed that participation by all demographic groups—particularly youths and women—was essential for an inclusive democracy.

The chairman also commended the Kano State Government for its infrastructure and social projects but warned against the misuse or neglect of public facilities.

“These facilities—our schools, health centres, and community halls—are investments in our shared future. Protecting them from vandalism or misuse is part of our civic duty,” he added.

Addressing the media’s role in politics, Warawa defended the forum’s earlier decision to suspend live political broadcasts—a measure implemented since May 2025—to curb misinformation and prevent inflammatory rhetoric.

“Our commitment to media freedom remains unwavering,” he said, “but freedom must come with responsibility. Pre-recorded and editorially reviewed political programmes help maintain peace and fairness.”

Warawa said the forum would continue to work with election authorities, civil society, and government agencies to promote transparency and responsible governance.

“Democracy flourishes when citizens are informed, engaged, and act in the national interest,” he concluded.
